Afghan War Allies Were Promised Safety in the US—Until Now

President Trump halted the special immigrant visa program for Afghans after an Afghan national who arrived through a Biden-era humanitarian parole program shot two National Guard members near the White House in November, killing one. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, had applied for the visa that allows Afghans who worked with the US military to obtain green cards. Trump called for a review of all Afghans admitted to the US, leaving dozens of Afghan allies in limbo mid-application process. Pastor Jeff Holder of Tarjoman Relief, an organization helping Afghans navigate visa and resettlement paperwork, says families were removed from departure lists when the new administration took office and the program stopped. Holder argues the US made a promise to these allies and is now backing away from it.
