Platner used the term to dismiss concerns regarding his Totenkopf tattoo, a symbol embraced by Neo-Nazis. He stated he is "sorry that I said it" and "endeavoring to improve every single day." This apology follows previous instances of Platner using the r-word on Reddit and making racist comments. Platner's campaign did not respond to inquiries about his continued use of the offensive term before publication of the initial article.
