Washington DC’s 240 million-gallon sewage spill is a symptom of nationwide trouble

Washington, D.C. experienced an estimated 240 million-gallon raw sewage spill into the Potomac River from mid-January to mid-March 2026, considered the largest in U.S. history. This spill, which dumped the equivalent of three days' worth of sewage from 800,000 average U.S. homes, highlights a nationwide issue of chronic underinvestment in aging sewer infrastructure. Pipes, pump stations, and treatment facilities built in the mid-20th century are now beyond their designed lifespan, leading to frequent contamination of waterways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23,000 to 75,000 sewer overflows occur annually in the U.S. These overflows are caused by structural failures like cracked pipes or mechanical issues in dry weather, and by overloaded systems during wet weather from increased rainwater or groundwater.
