What We Know About the ‘Massive’ Military Complex Being Built Beneath the White House

President Donald Trump's administration is proceeding with the construction of a "massive" military complex beneath the White House, despite a judge's order to halt aboveground work on a planned $400 million ballroom. The judge ruled on Thursday that while aboveground ballroom construction requires Congressional approval, underground work, including the military complex, can continue if deemed necessary for White House safety and security. This underground construction is intended to replace the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), a secure bunker dating back to World War II. The Trump administration argues the project involves "missile resistant steel columns, beams, drone proof roofing materials," and "bomb shelters, hospital and medical area." Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated that pausing construction would "hamper the Secret Service’s ability to meet its statutory obligations and protective mission."
