A new study indicates Alaska's glacial lakes are expanding 120% faster today than between 1986 and 1999, significantly increasing the risk of destructive glacial lake outburst floods. Researchers documented the evolution of 140 large glacial lakes from 2018 to 2024, finding they could become over four times larger as glaciers melt. This expansion heightens the potential for damage to downstream ecosystems and infrastructure. For instance, Juneau's Mendenhall River area faces recurring floods from Suicide Basin, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to consider a $613 million to $1 billion "lake tap" solution.
