Tens of thousands of people successfully campaigned against the execution of Charles ‘Sonny’ Burton in Alabama, despite his death sentence for a crime where he did not pull the trigger. With all appeals exhausted, Burton had prepared for execution by nitrogen gas at Holman correctional facility. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, a staunch supporter of capital punishment who has overseen more than 25 executions, had previously stated she had no plans to grant clemency.
