House passes short-term DHS funding bill

The House passed a bill Friday night to fund the Department of Homeland Security through May 22, with Speaker Mike Johnson advancing an eight-week stopgap that fully funds all DHS agencies including ICE and CBP, rejecting a Senate plan that would have extended funding through Sept. 30 without money for immigration enforcement. The vote was 213-203, with three House Democrats—Don Davis of North Carolina, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, and Henry Cuellar of Texas—joining all Republicans. Johnson rejected the Senate-passed bill as a "joke" for lacking border security funding, while Senate Democrats have already signaled opposition to the House's short-term measure. The DHS shutdown is now in its second month, with sharp divisions between House and Senate Republicans over how to fund the agencies. The Senate, currently on a two-week recess, must decide whether to return and take up the House bill.
