Pentagon brass tout destruction of Iran’s drone arsenal, but questions linger about what’s left

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine announced that Iran’s drone arsenal and weapons stockpiles are mostly depleted after five weeks of Operation Epic Fury. They stated that the U.S. and its partners struck approximately 90% of Iran's weapons factories, including every factory producing Shahed one-way attack drones. This destruction aims to eliminate Iran’s defense industrial base and its ability to reconstitute military capabilities for years. However, analysts like Kelly Grieco of the Stimson Center warn that reconstitution could be a matter of months, not years, because striking factories does not destroy design files or supplier relationships. A two-week ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, is currently in effect to allow for deeper negotiations, including nuclear constraints on Iran and sanctions relief.
