ProPublica Adds Ownership Search to Nursing Home Inspect Database

ProPublica added a search function to its Nursing Home Inspect database allowing users to find facilities by owner, manager, or officer name across more than 14,000 facilities. The upgrade comes as the outlet reports that Benjamin Landa, a nursing home owner nominated by President Trump as ambassador to Hungary, is suing the Trump administration over a Department of Health and Human Services audit that estimated more than $30 million in Medicare overpayments to Pinnacle Multicare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which Landa co-owns. Nearly one-fifth of nursing home owners hold financial stakes in five or more facilities, with nearly 100 owners controlling 50 or more homes. The new search tool reveals that Landa's name appears in ownership data for 102 nursing homes across eight states—far more than the 55 homes listed under his affiliated entities by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services. An attorney for Landa denied wrongdoing, citing conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
