These Are the Journalists Israel Has Killed Since the Start of the Iran War

Israel killed three journalists—Ali Shoaib of al-Manar TV, Fatima Ftouni of Al-Mayadeen TV, and her brother Mohamad Ftouni, a freelance photojournalist—in a strike Saturday on a clearly marked press vehicle near Jezzine in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military claimed Shoaib was a Hezbollah combatant disguised as a journalist but acknowledged a photograph it cited was photoshopped and provided no other evidence. The Committee to Protect Journalists said it is investigating the strike, noting the "disturbing pattern" of Israel accusing journalists of being combatants without credible evidence. Five journalists have now been killed in Lebanon since fighting with Hezbollah began March 2, and 11 total since October 7, 2023. A CPJ report found that Israel killed 86 of 129 journalists globally in 2025—the deadliest year on record for press freedom.
